How to Use Markdown Edit Title

This short Markdown guide will give you all that you need to know to write in both basic and more advanced Markdown. Consider it your personal Markdown cheat sheet.

Why Markdown?

You may have noticed that nearly all other social sharing sites only allow for plain text with no styling at all. We felt that since the 4Good audience often shares longer articles and posts, we needed to make sure that users could add formatting to make it easier for their audience to read. So why did we pick Markdown? Because of its simplicity and un-intrusiveness, especially in a web-based collaboration environment. Brett Terpstra explained it best in his post: Why Markdown? A two-minute explanation.

Table of Contents

You can create an automatic table of contents for your post that will link to all H1, H2, and H3 headers. You saw an example of a table of contents at the top of this page. Simply type:

{toc}

Emphasis

Italics, with *asterisks* or _underscores_.
Bold, with **asterisks** or __underscores__.
Combined with **asterisks and _underscores_**.
Strikethrough uses two tildes. ~~Scratch this.~~

Lists

1. First ordered list item
2. Another item
 * Unordered sub-list.
1. Actual numbers don't matter, just that it's a number
 1. Ordered sub-list
4. And another item.
Some text that should be aligned with the above item.

* Unordered list can use asterisks
- Or minuses
+ Or pluses

Generally, if you just want to share a link, you'll want to add that as a link type share. If you are writing up an article, you can put links inline with your text as follows:

[I'm an inline-style link](https://www.google.com)

I'm an inline-style link

If you wish to reference another user, article, or tag inline in your text you can add them in and 4Good will automatically link them:

@ to reference users
: for content
# for tags

Tables

Colons can be used to align columns.
| Tables        | Are           | Cool  |
| ------------- |:-------------:| -----:|
| col 3 is      | right-aligned | $1600 |
| col 2 is      | centered      |   $12 |
| zebra stripes | are neat      |    $1 |

The outer pipes (|) are optional, and you don't need to make the raw Markdown line up prettily. You can also use inline Markdown.

Markdown | Less | Pretty
--- | --- | ---
*Still* | `renders` | **nicely**
1 | 2 | 3

Blockquotes

> Blockquotes are very handy in email to emulate reply text.
> This line is part of the same quote.

Quote break.

> This is a very long line that will still be quoted properly when it wraps. Oh boy let's keep writing to make sure this is long enough to actually wrap for everyone. Oh, you can *put* **Markdown** into a blockquote.

Video Embeds

They can't be added directly in Markdown, so you have three options:

  1. Uploading the video directly to 4Good as a resource on the item you're posting
  2. If you have the video on another site, sharing it as a "link" item in 4Good and referencing the link or putting all items in a collection
  3. Add an image with a link to the video as follows
