Partners in Prevention, a division of the City of Longview, Texas, serves as a community coalition to prevent youth substance abuse and to address social norms that influence risky behavior, Under the umbrella of Partners in Prevention, the Mentoring Program serves approximately 200 youth across six counties. The Race Relations Committee have monthly meetings, as well as annual events, to promote racial harmony through open and honest dialogue. The Action Committee Against Underage Drinking is comprised of area community members working with law enforcement, parents, and schools to reduce underage drinking and risky behaviors. Circles of East Texas is a hand up, not a hand out, for people struggling with the barriers of living in poverty. Through a 15-week class, "Getting Ahead in a Just Gettin' by World," building of relationships, and weekly life skills education, families are addressing ways to overcome poverty and live self-sufficiently. The Youth Action Committee engages students in 8th - 12th grade to develop leadership skills, promote substance-free lifestyle through peer-to-peer influence, and participate in volunteer projects. Year-round youth recreation develops new skills and hobbies, provides opportunities to meet new friends, and many class contain activities to increase physical fitness.
