After six years doing poverty law lobbying for Illinois' Legal Aid Programs, in 1982 I launched the Central Illinois Foodbank. Later I ran the St. Louis Area Food Bank and served on food banking's national staff in Chicago. Since 1989 I've been directing West Michigan's food bank. Our claims to fame here are research on how communities in the U.S. can adequately address their hunger problem, and pioneering the use of former beverage trucks as mobile food pantries. Currently (May 2010) we provide 400,000 needy people across 40 counties with about 107,000 lbs. of food aid per day via 1,300 charity food programs, 7 warehouses and 10 mobile food pantry trucks.
