The Oregon Zoo Foundation (OZF) is a private, (501)(c)(3) support organization for the Oregon Zoo. Founded in 1978, OZF is led by a 23-member volunteer Board of Trustees comprised of Oregon business and community leaders. Two elected Metro councilors and the Zoo Director serve as ex-officio trustees. Under the direction of the OZF Director, fund-raising activities include individual giving (annual, major and planned), foundation and corporate support, membership services and special events. OZF manages Oregon’s largest attraction-based membership (currently 46,500 households).
OZF has increased its overall, annual financial support of the zoo by more than 400% since 1997. In 2008, OZF successfully completed a capital campaign that secured more than $6 million to build and operate the zoo’s national award-winning Predators of the Serengeti exhibit. OZF also led the 2008 effort to secure voter-approval of a $125 million bond measure for expanded exhibits and resource conservation measures. In 2011, OZF raised more than $825,000 in support of the zoo’s bird conservation and exhibition programs. Charity Navigator rates the OZF in the top 3% of U.S. charities.
OZF is poised to help the zoo to reach its full potential at the local, regional, national and global levels. In the coming decade, Foundation efforts will leverage demonstrated public support to secure the partnerships and additional resources that will transform the Oregon Zoo into one of the world’s finest.
