As originators of the Housing First model, Pathways to Housing NY believes housing is a basic human right. Our mission is to transform the lives of people experiencing mental health challenges and homelessness by supporting self-directed recovery and community integration. We work to change mental health and housing systems by:
• Providing immediate, low-barrier access to permanent housing, without preconditions;
• Setting the standard for services that support recovery and community integration;
• Advocating for people's right to live free from stigma and discrimination; and
• Conducting research to find innovative solutions and best practices for those who are experiencing homelessness and psychiatric disabilities, addictions, and complex medical issues.
Pathways was founded in NYC in 1992 by Dr. Sam Tsemberis, a clinical/community psychologist who spent years working with psychiatrically disabled men and women who were living on the streets. Using a person-centered approach, Pathways was the first program in the nation to offer apartments of their own to members of this population, directly from the streets and without first requiring treatment or sobriety. Two decades later, as the local affiliate (Pathways to Housing NY) of a now national organization (Pathways to Housing Inc.), we are working with more than 750 New Yorkers, and our purpose remains unchanged. Once a New Yorker is housed, we offer voluntary, community-based treatment and support services.
