Russ Chamberlain is the director of program development of Mercy Meals and More. He is an innovative, creative, out of the box thinker who has great networking and fund raising skills. With only $400 in his budget he opened the first free will diner program in New Bedford in 2010.
Mercy Meals and More under his direction operates New Bedford's only daily breakfast program. Meals are offered free and a donation box is available for those who are able to make a contribution. Meals are served restaurant-style with table service.Guests get to choose between pancakes, French toast, eggs to order and omelets. We believe this respects the dignity of our guests and promotes a sense of community as they are empowered at the start of the day by having a choice on what they eat and the conversation around the table while waiting for their meals provides information and support. . In addition to meals, used clothing, blankets, coats and books are available.Temporary emergency shelter is provided when city of New Bedford sees a need for it.A Sole Food foot clinic is offered every Thursday Morning.
Mercy Meals and More is an all volunteer program. Volunteers come from area faith communities and the general public. People in need of community service hours are encouraged to volunteer. An average of 100 meals are served each day at a cost of about $3.50 per meal.
After breakfast begins the bread run which supplies bread to the program but also nine different food pantries depending on the day and week. Other resources are also shared with food pantries when donated and not needed by Mercy Meals and More for it's program. Russell oversees all the breakfasts, bread runs and supply runs. He recruits and trains volunteers on an ongoing basis.
