We organized in 1999 because our school was on a list for the state of Arkansas as being one with students who scored below average on standardized test. We called a meeting with citizens to begin tutoring students after school. We met in fellowship halls of churches until 2002 when we received our 501 (c)3. In 2003 we purchased a vacant bank building with considerable help from Peoples Bank and Southern Arkansas University. We continued the work but lost our school in 2006. Some students have to travel up to 30 miles round trip a day to attend school. When the school closed we lost the only library available. We are in the process of writing proposals to help broaden the definition of literacy to include more than paper based texts and provide a library room in the community center to include technology that will help the parents and students become a part of this competitive multimedia society. You have probably drawn the conclusion that our community is underserved and low income as well. Yes, but we will continue to work and get our children what they need to be successful in this world. We have dedicated members who work tirelessly to provide as much help as they can. The members are all volunteers but we have to pay for much of the labor and materials to modernize the building. Our long range plan is being fulfilled, slowly but surely, with much prayer and a few generous donors. We have a long way to go but we will not stop until we see more and more progress.
